Top Make-up Artists

Make-up is considered as a form of Art and it has a strong historical background .Even in ancient times, make-up had its own value and this art develops with the development of human age.The early film industry naturally used the traditional styles of make-up techniques which proved inadequate soon.As time passes many makeup artists proved themselves and developed their techniques according to the time and needs.In film Industry when close-up became a need then face was the most focused feature and being a sensitive part facial make-up needed refinements.For this two well known make-up artists appeared in the Hollywood ,who were Max Factor (1877-1938) and George Westmore(1879-1931).Both started from wigmaking and recognised as the best make-up artists to make many make-up techniques and cosmetics for cinema.MGM was the only studio where Cecil Holand(1887-1973) was the make-up head in 1925 and remained till 1950s.Lon chaney (1883-1930) was a well known make-up artist who was considered as the pioneer ,he did make-up for a film Grand Hotel (1932) and the Good Earth (1937) and the most famous play "Phantom of Opera"(1925).Another great makeup artist wasJach dawn(1892-1961) who created make-up for the Wizard of Oz(1939).There are three kinds of makeup artists ,Straight make-up which is usually called as "street" through which actor's feature can be enhanced through cosmetics and corrective make-up.The second kind is Character make-up ,through which artist's looks changes by the use of facial prosthesis and other devices.The third one is special effects (FX)make-up in which mechanical devices like robotic inserts are used .Make-up artists developed a character's psychology,for this purpose they adapted cosmetic and technological inventions,to solve the colour problems and became expert of human anatomy and the potential effects of all artificial skin facial and hair treatments.In short, make-up artists are not just the the artists but the scientists too and have lots of scientific solutions along with the simple cosmetic tools.
